Curriculum Vitae

James J. Bird, PhD, is an associate professor on the faculty of educational leadership at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is beginning his eleventh year at the university. His previous departmental responsibilities included being the graduate program director and interim department chair. He usually teaches Fundamentals of Leadership and the Principalship courses to Master’s level students; School Finance and Organizational Theory and Behavior courses to doctoral level students; and, he supervises Administrative Internship courses at both graduate levels. His current research interests include authentic leadership and school governance issues.

Before coming to Charlotte he was a public school administrator for 31 years, the last 16 as superintendent of the Avondale Schools in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Previous positions included deputy superintendent, assistant superintendent, junior high principal, and middle school teacher in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio respectively. His undergraduate work was completed at the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse and his graduate studies were at the Ohio State University.

Jim and his wife, Linda, are from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and currently reside in Mooresville. They have two adult daughters and two grandchildren.

Research Interests:

His research interests center around authentic leadership and the factors that make building principals and district superintendents effective.
